It's essential, esp. since something like Quickbooks becomes unusable without being able to search for a reference id

Yup! Need this for the WooCommerce integration and I'm sure a many other apps would benefit as well.
Example: Find or Create Customer in WooCommerce > Search for Customer > Tickbox "Create if doesn't exist"
